My Glory Was I Had Such Friends by Amy Silverstein Melissa Apple will lead this month's discussion. In this moving memoir about the power of friendship and the resilience of the human spirit, Amy Silverstein tells the story of the extraordinary group of women who supported her as she waited on the precipice for a life-saving heart transplant. “I debated on choosing this book because I knew it was going to be an extremely personal read, and I wouldn’t be able to discuss it without talking about why it hit so close to home for me. As a two-time kidney transplant recipient, my situation was not quite as life or death as the author’s, but it certainly has required strength, resilience, and hope. A lot of hope. I’ve been laid up in the hospital, hooked up to a dialysis machine, and left hoping beyond hope for a matching donor. But through it all, I’ve had the glory of such friends that were there for me through every step of the journey. Join me at the wine bar for what’s sure to be a powerful and emotional discussion. Bring your tissues; I’ll bring the chocolate!” -- Melissa

Death in the Air: The True Story of a Serial Killer, the Great London Smog, andthe Strangling of a City by Kate Winkler Dawson A real-life thriller in the vein of The Devil in the White City, this is a gripping, historical narrative of a serial killer, an environmental disaster, and an iconic city struggling to regain its footing. "Choking the air for five days in 1952, the Great London Smog killed more than 12,000 people and created chaos throughout the city; but that was far from the only danger; at the same moment a serial killer was lurking in the shadows and preying on innocent women. What drove this man to commit such violent acts? How did the police manage to find him through the thick blanket of smog that covered the city? What measures did women take to cope with the threat? Much like H.H. Holmes and the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, I am drawn to not only the great events of history but the many fascinating stories contained within." -- Kevin
