December Reading Challenge

Get your kids reading this month!

Brightly, a website that is created by Penguin Random House, listed many ways to challenge your child to read this month.  Here are a few of their suggestions:

  • Read a book about a winter sport.
    • Check out our Juv 796 area for a wide selection of cool sport books
  • Ask a Librarian.
    • We like this one!  We have several displays that might inspire a new book topic, too.
  • Read a book about a holiday you don’t celebrate at home.
    • Did you know the Youth Services Department has an entire Holiday Section?
  • Celebrate National Short Story Day, December 21, by exploring an anthology or collection of short stories and using it as inspiration to write your own short story.
    • Our Fiction section has several to choose from
  • Try reading a book aloud to the tune of your favorite winter song, such as “Jingle Bells” or “Winter Wonderland.”
  • Read a book by an author who has a first or last name that starts with the same letter as yours.
  • Gather up old books you no longer read and donate them to those in need.
    • The Friends of the Library accepts donations all year long in our foyer. Their used book sale helps to pay for special projects around the library.
